The topic of the show was conservative students getting along with liberal administrations. Ubbens, the Chairman of the Susquehanna University College Republicans and Co-Chairman of the Pennsylvania Federation of College Republicans, discussed a situation that occurred as a result of a recent speaker, Joseph Phillips, he invited to campus. Joseph Phillips is an African American actor, who was formerly seen on “The Cosby Show.” The topic of his lecture was “Affirmative Action and Racial Preferencing.” The Susquehanna University Office of Multicultural Affairs was invited to participate in and support the event. However, they declined. Instead, they proceeded to organize their own event, expressing the opposing view of Affirmative Action. Several faculty members expressed concern with Phillips speaking out against Affirmative Action. Although the Susquehanna University College Republicans had a few differences with the faculty, the event was a success.
After the event, Ubbens was able to meet with the Dean of Student Life to discuss the support of the faculty for future events. Phillips recalled the events that unfolded at Susquehanna University in his recent op-ed titled “This Crazy Mixed Up World.” This event was also highlighted on the nationally recognized website, Townhall.com.
Ubbens explained, “I’m very happy with the end result of this event and the ways of which the administration worked with us. Though it was a difficult task to begin with, I am confident that this kind of situation will not come up in the future.”
The Susquehanna University College Republicans are the most active political organization on campus. They are also recognized as being one of the most active chapters in the state by the Pennsylvania Federation of College Republicans. Members of this organization have recently attended a Pennsylvania College Republican seminar in Hershey, PA. They are in the process of planning the second annual “Paint the Campus Red Week” at Susquehanna University, which will be held September 15-19.
